Frequently asked questions
1. What is the difference between the Fi9, i9 and S1 Digital models?
Fi9 is the standard high-output solventless laminator, i9 is configured for two-layer lamination, and S1 Digital is the digital-control variant for shorter runs and tighter recipe management. The right model depends on your mix of structures and run lengths, not on the highest speed in the catalogue.
2. Why laminate without solvent instead of with solvent?
Three reasons: no drying tunnel, so no solvent evaporation energy and no effluent treatment; no solvent residue in the laminate; and a more compact line. The trade-off is a more disciplined process — mixing ratio, pot life and web tension are less forgiving than with solvent-based adhesive.
3. Which adhesive systems does the machine handle?
100 % solids two-component polyurethane systems, in the standard configurations. Adhesive chemistry must be matched to the film structure; the machine cannot compensate for an adhesive that is wrong for the application.
4. What coating weight range is achievable?
Coating weight is set by the application and the adhesive system, and is quoted together with the machine configuration. What matters commercially is grams per square metre of laminate, not the number on the datasheet — the comparison with solvent-based adhesive must be made on that basis.
5. Do I need a curing room?
Yes. Solventless adhesive cures in a controlled environment with defined temperature and time. Without a curing area, the process does not close — the laminate may look acceptable and fail in slitting or in the customer's packing line.
6. How is tension controlled?
Closed-loop tension control on unwind and rewind, with taper control and edge guiding. Tension and guiding are where most lamination quality is decided, particularly on thin films and aluminium foil.
7. What is the minimum run length that makes sense?
It depends on start-up scrap and setup time against the volume per recipe — not on the total plant volume. Short runs with frequent structure changes make the machine work harder for the same output.
