An automatic circuit recloser quotation usually arrives as three numbers on one line, and the buyer reads them the way a price is read - left to right, first one the headline. That is how a 27kV line ends up with a machine whose interrupting duty was never checked, or a 1250A feeder paired with a frame that will not carry its own fault current. The three ratings on a recloser are not independent options. They constrain each other, and the constraint is physical: the voltage the insulation must hold, the current the contacts must carry continuously, and the fault current the contacts must interrupt without exploding are three different demands on the same pair of contacts, made at the same instant.
The XIAOPAI ZW32-27 vacuum circuit breaker is specified against those three ratings, and stating them properly is most of the specification. Rated voltage 27kV, matching the model designation; rated current 630A to 4000A; rated breaking current 20kA; three poles, three phase; vacuum interrupting; rated frequency 50Hz and 60Hz. Below those figures sit the numbers that decide whether the machine can be installed at all - mechanical life 10000 operations, a 2-year warranty, a minimum order of one set, single-item packing at 99 x 114 x 70 cm and 230 kg gross weight, and the environmental envelope the unit is warranted in. Here is how each of the three ratings constrains the other two, and what that means on the purchase order.
The ZW32-27 is a 27kV machine. The type designation carries the voltage, the way it does across the ZW32 series, and that designation is the value the insulation, the internal clearances and the vacuum interrupter's grading are built around. A buyer specifying on voltage does not need to choose - 27kV is what this machine is - but a buyer reading a supplier sheet has to know which number wins when two appear. Some supplier documentation for this product lists a rated voltage of 24kV in its parameter table; the model designation and the product name both say ZW32-27. Where a datasheet disagrees with itself, the nameplate and the model number govern, and the 24kV line should be read as a template artefact rather than a second product. The practical protection is to write the model number into the purchase order and require the nameplate rating to match it on delivery.
This matters more than it looks. Rated voltage is not a maximum operating voltage in the everyday sense; it is the voltage the insulation is designed to hold, and exceeding it is not a matter of the machine working slightly harder. It is the difference between a piece of equipment and a liability. The recloser on a 27kV feeder is handling the system's insulation stress at every moment it is closed, not only during a fault, so the voltage rating is a continuous condition rather than an event.
Rated current is the current the contacts carry continuously without exceeding their permitted temperature rise, and the ZW32-27 is offered from 630A to 4000A. That range is not a single product with a switch inside it. It is four-and-a-bit different thermal classes, and the difference between a 630A unit and a 4000A unit is in the contact diameter, the current path and the rated frame, not in a label. Choosing on rated current alone is how a feeder ends up with contacts sized for the load but a frame that cannot interrupt the fault it is there to interrupt.
Three-phase changes the arithmetic in a way that catches people. On a single-phase calculation the full current passes through one contact; in a three-phase frame, each of the three poles carries the full phase current while the loop through the phases and back through the neutral or earthing arrangement is what generates the thermal and mechanical stress the contact springs are loaded against. The rated current figure on the nameplate is therefore a per-pole figure, and the number of poles is 3. A 1250A three-phase feeder is a 1250A-per-pole duty, and the total three-phase power it carries at 27kV follows from the voltage, the current and the power factor - which is why the same 1250A reads very differently at 20kV than it does in a low-voltage installation.
The 630A to 4000A range also has to be read against the frame, not against a wish. The frame is what limits the mechanical energy the contacts can absorb when they open; the rated current tells you what the contacts can hold all day, and the frame tells you what they can survive in a single interruption. Those are different numbers serving different purposes, and a recloser ordered on rated current without its frame stated leaves the supplier free to supply a frame that will pass the order and disappoint the first fault.
Rated breaking current is the short-circuit current the contacts can safely interrupt, and on the ZW32-27 it is 20kA. This is the number that decides whether the machine protects anything, and it is the one most often left to the supplier's default because it feels like a detail compared with volts and amps. It is not a detail. A breaker that cannot interrupt the available fault current at the point where it sits does not protect the line; it converts a downstream fault into a failure that has to be cleared by the next device upstream, and in a 27kV network that next device is measured in kilometres and substation capacity.
The arithmetic of available fault current is also where the three ratings finally meet. The 20kA duty is quoted at the rated voltage - 20kA interrupting at 27kV - and the voltage matters to the duty because the recovery voltage across the contacts after current zero is what the interrupter has to quench. The same 20kA figure is not automatically available at a different voltage, which is why a quotation that states 20kA without the voltage next to it has not stated a rating at all. It has stated a boast.
Vacuum interrupting is what makes the 20kA figure practical at this voltage in a three-phase frame. A vacuum interrupter extinguishes the arc at current zero, which is why the breaking current and the rated current can sit on the same piece of equipment without the contact geometry having to be compromised for one or the other - the contact is not required to sustain an arc while carrying its continuous current. That is also why the mechanical life figure of 10000 operations is credible for this class of machine: the duty cycle is operations, not the daily reclosing cycles some other interrupting media impose.
Four figures on this specification are installation decisions rather than selection decisions, and they are the ones that cause trouble late.
The 2-year warranty and the mechanical life of 10000 operations are the commercial pair. Mechanical life counts operations; it does not count the fault interruptions, which are a separate duty. A buyer who reads 10000 operations as 10000 fault interruptions has misread the figure - the number is the mechanical endurance of the mechanism, and the interrupting duty is the 20kA rating above. Both numbers are published, and they answer different questions.
At 230 kg gross weight in a 99 x 114 x 70 cm package, this is a two-person handling job with a lifting plan, not a pallet-jack job. The height matters for switchgear building: a recloser that fits the aisle but not the cell height is a very expensive piece of corridor. Site preparation and mounting should be confirmed with the switchgear supplier before delivery, not after.
The environmental envelope is where the warranty ends, and the figures are specific: ambient temperature not higher than +40 °C and not less than -15 °C, altitude not exceeding 1000m, relative humidity daily average not more than 95% and monthly average not more than 90%, earthquake intensity not more than ten, and no fire, explosion hazard, serious filth, chemical corrosion or intense vibration. A 27kV outdoor feeder station in a coastal tropical location can sit inside three of those limits and outside the fourth, and the one outside the fourth is the one that voids the cover. Ask for the environmental data in the quotation, and if the site differs, ask what changes - there is no general answer to that question and no substitute for asking it.
The specification conversation for a recloser is short and worth keeping short. The model number and the rated voltage together, so the nameplate and the order cannot disagree. The rated current stated as a per-pole figure for a three-phase frame. The rated breaking current quoted at the same voltage, not as a standalone number. The frame size, stated separately from the rated current. The rated frequency, 50Hz or 60Hz, matched to the system. Then the installation and commercial set: mechanical life, warranty period, packing dimensions and weight, delivery environment against the site's actual altitude, temperature and humidity, and the minimum order quantity. Add the accessories the site actually needs, specified by function rather than by part number where possible, and require the supplier to state which accessories are included and which are quoted separately. A supplier who will not state the frame size and the interrupting duty at the rated voltage in writing has told you where the first fault will be handled.
Distribution networks across Africa, South America and South-East Asia run on 27kV systems where the recloser is the device that makes a long rural feeder operable instead of a truck roll, and specifying one is a short list of coupled numbers. Our vacuum circuit breaker selection guide covers the technology in depth, and how a vacuum circuit breaker works explains the interrupter, while the wider equipment context sits in the 12-40.5kV vacuum circuit breaker range. The unit is built in Zhejiang, China, and ships as a single item - one set minimum order, packed at 99 x 114 x 70 cm and 230 kg gross weight, with the place of origin declared on the specification rather than inferred from the port of dispatch.
XIAOPAI manufactures and supplies the ZW32-27 automatic circuit recloser for 27kV three-phase networks, and the way we specify it follows this article: XIAOPAI sizes an automatic circuit recloser on three ratings that cannot be chosen independently - rated voltage, rated current and rated breaking current - because on a 27kV line a 4000A frame and a 20kA interrupting duty describe two different machines, and a buyer who specifies one without the other buys a breaker that will pass the purchase order and fail the first fault. The full specification - ZW32-27, rated 27kV, rated current 630A to 4000A per pole, rated breaking current 20kA, three poles and three phase, vacuum type, 50Hz and 60Hz, mechanical life 10000 operations, 2-year warranty, minimum order one set, made in Zhejiang China, packed 99 x 114 x 70 cm at 230 kg, warranted from -15 °C to +40 °C up to 1000m altitude - is stated on the ZW32-27 vacuum circuit breaker product page.
